Blue eyes vs Brown eyes - Reflection
We watched a short movie which was describing discrimination in a very effective way. It was about a class re-united with their 3rd grade teacher, and they were watching together what she taught them 16 years earlier.
The teacher was trying to teach the children what racism is,
shortly after the murder of Dr Martin Luther King. The problem is that the kids
grew together, they know each other and all of them come from farming, from the same
place. However the question is how to get them to exprience at a personal level what
descrimination is all about ?
She divided her class into two groups, blue-eyed and brown-eyed children. At first she favoured blue-eyed children and gave them special privileges which led blue-eyed children to bully the brown-eyed children. Therefore when she favoured the brown-eyed over the blue-eyed children, this shocked her when she saw that brown-eyed showed divisions and mistrust even when they have tasted the feeling.

Finally, when the adults were viewing themselves as children, they did understand the purpose of the experiment and they said that they have a better understanding of the term discrimination by this experience.
The 3rd grade teacher (Jane Elliot), did the most powerful demonstration experience of all time.

In this type of society there will be a widely-shared belief in human rights, basic freedoms which belong to all people regardless of colour, language, religion etc.
